4th of July

In case you didn’t know, the 4th in Chicago is pretty sweet.  You wouldn’t know that based on my mother’s inability to hide her disappointment at missing the Provo parade to spend the 4th here in Chicago.  Hopefully someone took pictures of PHS marching band for her so she doesn’t miss out entirely, looking at you Ryan.  That begin said, we did get my parents and little sister out here for the weekend.  Weather was perfect, Cubs won, what else could you ask for?  Well, I know.  Ever heard of the Taste of Chicago?  I have……

Turkey Leg...Yumm

And it makes me really happy, as is clearly illustrated here.

SatisfactionThe Taste is nothing but pure Gluttony.  There is about 60 booths set up in Grant Park and they serve just about everything you could imagine.  Just fantastic, pure joy.  I don’t know that it beats the Provo parade, though, too close to call.  The family does look happy here, so that’s a step in the right direction.

The Taste of Chicago

Molly and I were pretty content as well.

Chicago is also really into fireworks.  From about May – September, there is a firework show every Wednesday and Saturday night at Navy Pier.  Side note:  It is my opinion that the city basically plans a full year’s worth of events but then crams everything into about a 5 month period, from May – September, because the rest of the time it’s so bitterly cold.  It makes for quite the eventful summer.  Based on this fact, you’d think the city would put on one heck of a firework show for the 4th.  Unfortunately, not the case, it wasn’t as impressive as we would have liked.  However, I don’t think there’s a better place to watch fireworks than sitting on  the shore of Lake Michigan with the city in the background.  They do have fireworks on the 3rd and the 4th, so bonus points for having two.  Here’s a couple of my favorite pictures that I took.

FireworksOverall, it was a fantastic weekend.   I put up more of my favorite pictures from the weekend here.   Nothing better than having a 4 day weekend to celebrate our nation.  What’s more American than eating a lot of food and blowing stuff up?  I sure don’t know.

  1. So was it rude to call mom during the parade? We just wanted her to realize how jealous we were that she was in Chicago with you guys. Awesome firework pics!

  2. Oh man, I wish I would have gotten out there this summer. Taste would have been amazing, Gina’s been and has talked it up too :-) Great firework shots too!

  3. BD and I are jealous about Taste. I’ve been once, and ate a turkey leg just like that despite my abhorrence for eating meat off the bone. It was taste-y. I also remember cheesecake on a stick, a very Chicago thing. Glad to see you guys are doing well!

  4. Please send me a Portillo’s dog!
